Behavioural Science Can Make Us Better Decision-makers

Tali Sharot, author of The Optimism Bias and The Influential Mind will be the opening keynote speaker at Inventures 2021.

Award-winning author and acclaimed researcher, Tali Sharot is a leading expert on decision-making and emotion. Sharot’s insights have helped organizations induce behavioural change, create effective decision-making policies, and shift hard-held beliefs. Sharot’s work at the intersection of behavioural economics, psychology and neuroscience has been used by businesses to improve leadership, communications and refine strategy.

“Dr. Sharot’s research is fascinating and insightful. Her keynote address will be a great launch for Inventures as it illuminates why we humans do some of the baffling and amazing things we do, and it will give the over 3,000 people in attendance an ‘optimistic’ boost to step off with,” said Alberta Innovates CEO Laura Kilcrease.

A professor at University College London, Sharot is currently a visiting professor at MIT and directs the Affective Brain Lab, where her team identifies ways to encourage behavioural change. Sharot is also the author of several books, including The Influential Mind: What the Brain Reveals About Our Power to Change Others (Henry Holt, 2017) and The Optimism Bias: A Tour of the Irrationally Positive Brain (Pantheon, 2011).

Prof. Sharot has been a guest on CNN, The Today Show, MSNBC and more; co-presented BBC’s Science Club; and spoken at TED, The World Economic Forum & The European Parliament, among many other venues.
