Karen McAthy is a published author, educator and innovator in the plant-based, vegan dairy alternatives sector. Karen co-founded vegan cultured cheese brand, Blue Heron in 2017, and Lumi Foods in 2020. With Lumi Foods, the focus has been on producing cultured plant-based cheeses, and creating unique styles of cheese, with independent standards of identity. Amplifying this focus, Lumi Foods (via consortia project work within Protein Industries Canada) is developing starter and ripening cultures for use in the plant-based/vegan dairy alterntives sector and developing prototype cheese styles utilizinig animal-free proteins in varying methods of cheese creation.
